Growing up in downtown Sacramento before the war, Setsuko (Shimono) Moriya recalls the tight-knit community of the old Japantown. In the heart of what was once a thriving downtown scene, Setsuko’s parents ran a restaurant serving American food.

The story of the Ishida family encapsulates how the war in/directly cut short the lives of ordinary people, namely the Issei, who might have otherwise lived to an old age. Or at least, lived to an old age in peace.
